Released: 2016

Overview

ANYmal is a pioneering autonomous quadruped robot developed by Swiss company ANYbotics for industrial inspection and monitoring applications. With its four articulated legs, ANYmal can navigate stairs, climb over obstacles, and traverse challenging industrial terrain that would be impossible for wheeled or tracked robots. The robot's design emphasizes robustness, autonomy, and adaptability to harsh industrial environments.

Built for 24/7 operation, ANYmal conducts routine inspections in oil & gas facilities, power generation plants, mining operations, and other industrial sites. It autonomously follows predefined inspection routes, collects multimodal sensor data including visual, thermal, and acoustic readings, and detects anomalies such as leaks, temperature variations, or equipment malfunctions. This reduces the need for human workers to enter hazardous areas while improving inspection frequency and data quality.

ANYmal's modular sensor payload and intelligent software platform allow it to be customized for specific inspection tasks. The robot uses simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) for navigation, AI-powered analytics for anomaly detection, and cloud connectivity for fleet management and data integration with existing enterprise systems.

Key Features

  • Autonomous Navigation: Advanced SLAM and path planning enable fully autonomous operation in complex industrial environments
  • Quadruped Mobility: Four articulated legs provide access to stairs, catwalks, and uneven terrain inaccessible to wheeled robots
  • IP67 Protection: Sealed design withstands dust, water, and harsh industrial conditions for reliable outdoor and indoor operation
  • Multimodal Sensing: Integrated visual, thermal, acoustic, and gas detection sensors for comprehensive inspection capabilities
  • 120-Minute Runtime: Extended battery life with automated docking station for continuous 24/7 operation
  • AI-Powered Analytics: Onboard and cloud-based processing for real-time anomaly detection and predictive maintenance
  • Fleet Management: Centralized software platform for managing multiple robots and integrating inspection data

Applications

ANYmal is deployed across energy, utilities, and heavy industry sectors where routine inspections are critical but hazardous for human workers. In oil & gas facilities, the robot performs methane leak detection, equipment temperature monitoring, and visual inspections of offshore platforms and refineries. Power generation plants use ANYmal to inspect turbines, transformers, and substations, detecting hotspots and equipment degradation before failures occur.

Mining operations, chemical plants, and manufacturing facilities leverage ANYmal for safety-critical inspections in confined spaces and areas with explosion risks. The robot's ability to operate continuously and collect consistent, high-quality data improves operational efficiency, reduces inspection costs, and enhances worker safety by minimizing human exposure to dangerous environments.

Technical Highlights

ANYmal's proprietary actuated leg design features compliant joints with series elastic actuators (SEAs) that provide both force control and shock absorption, enabling smooth locomotion over irregular surfaces and safe interaction with the environment. Each of the four legs has three degrees of freedom (12 DOF total), controlled by sophisticated algorithms that dynamically adjust gait patterns based on terrain conditions.

The robot's perception system combines multiple LiDAR sensors, stereo cameras, depth sensing, and IMUs to build detailed 3D maps while simultaneously localizing itself in real-time. ANYbotics' proprietary software stack includes model-based control for stable locomotion, AI-based inspection tools trained on industrial data, and edge computing capabilities for low-latency decision-making. The system integrates with enterprise platforms through standard APIs, enabling seamless data flow to SCADA, CMMS, and asset management systems.
